What moved

Across the markets we track, 292 Australian companies recorded 322 leadership changes in September 2026. WiseTech Global led with 4 events, and BCI Minerals, CSL, Dexus and Hansen Technologies logged 2 each. On 30 September Pulse+IT reported that the Australian Digital Health Agency's chief executive of six years is leaving to become Chief Operating Officer at the Australian Taxation Office from 2 November, with an acting CEO in place while the board recruits.

The top seats moved on 29 September. Adairs lost its CEO and began a search for a replacement, according to the Adairs ASX notice. The CFO of Tyro Payments is stepping down, according to the Tyro Payments notice, and QBE Insurance Group appointed a new Australia Pacific CEO.

Boards changed too. Pengana International Equities completed a buy-back of 58.6% of its shares and restructured its board, with three directors resigning and an interim Chair appointed (Sharecafe). Ironbark Financial Group restructured its leadership, appointing a new executive chair and a new group chief executive (Financial Newswire). On the same day a securities fraud lawsuit was filed against Fluence Energy over missed financial targets and production delays.

At PPS Mutual, Financial Newswire reported an executive reshuffle, with a newly created Director of Strategy role and a promotion to Head of Product. Matthew Pilcher, director of strategy at PPS Mutual, set the change against the mutual's growth: “I've been part of this journey since before we launched, and seeing PPS Mutual grow to more than 18,000 Members and approaching $150 million of in-force premiums has been remarkable”.

Where the demand lands

The demand category is re-engagement. Most of the 322 changes put a new person in a seat that instructs outside counsel or approves who does, and a new chief executive or CFO reviews the advisers they inherit. For partners and business development teams at Australian law firms, a relationship with a departing executive does not carry over on its own.

The work follows the seat. A CEO exit like the one at Adairs creates separation terms for the outgoing executive and contract work for the incoming one. The board changes at Pengana International Equities and Ironbark Financial Group create briefings on directors' duties and a governance review of each new structure. The securities fraud claim against Fluence Energy puts class action defence and continuous disclosure advice in front of a board under scrutiny.

Public sector moves fall in the same category. The Australian Digital Health Agency and the ACT Public Service both lost long-serving heads in September, and the Australian Energy Regulator appointed a permanent Chief Information Officer after separating from the competition watchdog. For firms on government panels, a new agency head reads the panel arrangements fresh. The introduction falls to the partners who held the old relationship.
