What moved

Across the UK we counted 119 companies with 123 geographic expansion events in September 2026, in the commercial and property category. On 25 September KKR's Mirastar platform acquired eight UK logistics properties totalling 2.7M sq ft from Ares Real Estate, in Corby, Doncaster, Stoke-on-Trent and Milton Keynes (Pulse2). On 30 September Sentinel Real Estate pushed further into the UK living sector by acquiring Hearthstone, building on its January 2026 UK platform launch (citybiz). On the same day Redwood Investment Management added UK commercial real estate loan exposure to its private real estate debt fund (PRN).

Occupiers took space as well. Blitzy signed Cambridge's largest office deal of 2026 on 24 September, 52,000 square feet of expansion space (PRN). Aldi announced on 28 September plans to open 40 additional stores in 2027, despite a 1% decline in earnings (Evening Standard Business). Fairmont Hotels opened its first hotel in the north of England (TTG Media), and Vp plc opened a depot in Morley, Leeds, for its Stopper Specialists business (The Construction Index).

On 30 September the government announced Great British Grid, a state-owned transmission network designed to ease grid connection bottlenecks and let businesses, data centre operators among them, build their own connection infrastructure (Capacity Media). Andy Burnham, UK prime minister, Great British Energy (GB Grid), described it as “a publicly owned company that will challenge the private sector operators”. Five days earlier DESNZ announced £90M for heat networks that carry data centre waste heat to homes, with a £41M first phase operational from 2028 (The Register).

New entrants arrived in the UK at the same time. Brite Payments secured an FCA Electronic Money Institution licence (Finextra) and Float launched in its first market outside South Africa (The Fintech Times).

Where the demand lands

The demand category is commercial and property, and across the 123 events it lands in two places. Investors buying UK stock, as KKR's Mirastar and Sentinel Real Estate did, need acquisition due diligence and financing documents. Redwood's loan exposure brings in the lender side of the same deals.

Occupiers create leasing work. Aldi's 40 stores and Blitzy's 52,000 square feet in Cambridge each mean agreements for lease and fit-out terms, and first-time entrants such as Brite Payments and Float need a first UK office before they can trade from one.

Great British Grid, announced on 30 September, and the £90M DESNZ heat network programme bring connection agreements and land rights into property work. That is where real estate practices meet energy practices.

This matters to the real estate partners and business development teams of UK law firms whose clients are among the 119 companies buying and connecting UK sites this month.
