A prospectus and an FTC investigation came within days of each other, and together they spread Anthropic's US legal demand across four practice areas in one quarter.

What moved

Anthropic logged 10 qualifying events in the US in the last 90 days, from 7 July to 5 October 2026, and four of them concern its public listing. On 11 September MarketWatch reported the company preparing for an IPO. Analyst views reported on 18 September put the raise above SpaceX's record $75 billion, at a valuation above $1.77 trillion (analyst coverage). On 24 September BeInCrypto reported the timing shifted from October to November, at a valuation near $2 trillion. The prospectus followed on 2 October, warning that US government actions could affect relationships with commercial customers and government contracts (The Next Web).

Washington moved in the same fortnight. Anthropic's CEO attended an administration AI lunch on 29 September, after a private dinner on 27 September (Forkast News). On 30 September the Federal Trade Commission opened an industry-wide investigation into Anthropic and OpenAI among other AI labs over rogue AI agents (The Guardian). Mobile World Live reported on 1 October that the agency is drafting civil investigative demands to compel testimony and document production.

The operating footprint grew alongside. On 1 October Anthropic signed a lease for 465,630 square feet at 330 Hudson Street in Manhattan (Commercial Observer). Computing commitments of $517 billion over 11 months, against $180 billion previously disclosed, were reported on 16 September (investor coverage). On 15 September SEIU-UWW served 72-hour strike notice for security workers at its California offices (Business Insider).

Where the demand lands

Corporate and M&A carries most of it: a listing under an open FTC investigation means prospectus disclosure and responses to civil investigative demands. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has argued for “permanent third-party evaluators inside AI companies as part of a wider plan to curb advances in frontier capabilities”, a position for capital markets and regulatory partners to handle as disclosure.

Commercial and property work follows the Manhattan lease and the compute contracts; insolvency and employment work follows the 15 September strike notice. For business development teams at US law firms, 10 events in 90 days make the case for re-engagement with Anthropic and its counterparties.
